The Nisga’a Highway 113 runs north from Terrace through vast lava fields and along the mighty river K’alii-askim Lisims (the Nass River).
Explore the astounding traditional territory of the Nisga’a people, who invite you to experience their hospitality and culture at their four villages in the Nass: Gitlaxt’aamiks (formerly New Aiyansh), the capital of the Nisga’a Nation; Gitwinksihlkw, home of the famous bear’s den pts’aan (totem pole); Laxgats’ap, where their sacred artifacts are displayed in the Nisga’a Museum; and Gingolx, the seafood capital of the Nass.
The Nisga’a Visitor Centre offers a self-guided auto tour totalling 19 stops including the natural hot springs, the lava beds in Anhluut’ukwsim Laxmihl Angwinga’asanskwhl Nisga’a Provincial Park, and the four villages.
The Nisga’a Commercial Group and a couple of local tour guiding outfits offer tours of the Nass Valley, including a hiking tour to the origin of the eruption, a mushroom/herb/botanical tour and a fish wheel tour. Guides are local Nisga’a who live in the area. Tours leave and end in Terrace.
